The useful version
Start with the connection beneath the terminal.
Schiphol’s train station sits directly below the terminal building, so most visitors can move from baggage reclaim to a city-bound platform without arranging a separate airport transfer. The simplest default is the train to Amsterdam Centraal.
This is deliberately a practical guide, not a complete transport directory. Services, engineering works and bus stops can change; use the official journey planner on the day and treat the notes below as a calm starting point.
The guide
A few decisions that make the day easier.
01
01 · Find the station
Follow the signs to Schiphol Plaza, then go downstairs.
After the baggage hall, follow signs for Schiphol Plaza and trains. The railway station is directly underneath the terminal; escalators and lifts connect the plaza to the platforms. Departure screens show the current platform and destination.
02
02 · Choose the train
Amsterdam Centraal is usually the cleanest first stop.
Schiphol’s official information says trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in roughly 14–17 minutes, with frequent service between the airport and the city. Check the NS Travel Planner for the next departure, platform and any disruption before you tap in.
You can generally pay for Dutch public transport with a contactless debit card, credit card or phone. Use the same payment method at the start and end of the journey. If you prefer a ticket, machines are available at Schiphol.
04
04 · Consider the bus
Use the bus when your destination is not central.
Schiphol’s bus station is outside Schiphol Plaza. Buses can be useful for nearby hotels and destinations; for Amsterdam city-centre rail connections, the train is usually the faster, clearer choice.
Plan well
Keep the useful details close.
01
If you are staying near Centraal
Take the train, then walk, tram or metro from Amsterdam Centraal according to your accommodation.
02
If you arrive late
Check the current timetable rather than relying on a remembered schedule. Night services and replacement buses can vary.
03
If you have a tight connection
Leave time for baggage, the walk to Schiphol Plaza and finding the correct platform. The airport is easy to navigate, but not instantaneous.
Practical details

The official Schiphol guide describes the train journey as approximately 14–17 minutes. Check the live NS planner for the exact service.
Can I use a contactless card?+
Schiphol says you can pay directly with a contactless bank card or phone for most Dutch public transport. Tap in and out with the same card or device.
Where is the train station?+
The station is directly below the terminal building, reached via Schiphol Plaza by escalator or lift.
Should I take a taxi instead?+
A taxi can make sense for heavy luggage, several travellers or a distant address. Use the official taxi stand or a pre-booked taxi, not an unsolicited offer inside the terminal.
